2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Spotted

Someone has spotted what looks to be like the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. We can't see from the front if the Chevy logo is there. But from the rear, we can definitely see the bowtie. It is indeed a Chevrolet vehicle.

Luckily, in another sticker-related misstep, someone opened the door and revealed one of the most poorly placed communiques we’ve ever seen: a tag on the dash that confirms that this is a Camaro Z28—a vehicle often rumored but not officially announced. Even better, the sticker reveals that this mule is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 backed up by a six-speed automatic transmission. Chances are equally good that the Camaro Z28 also will be offered with a six-speed manual. So, in a sense, you can think of the Z28 as the Chevy Awesome.

The tape and camo is thwarting our ability to discern all of the styling changes, but we do note a few. The rocker panels might be reshaped, and there’s a new rear fascia with quad pipes sticking out. (The current top-dog Camaro, the SS, sports dual exhaust pipes.) And we bet the mosquito netting up front is hiding some mean-looking grillework. The matte-black rims are wrapped in wide, Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, and there’s some seriously big brake hardware on display.

And while we usually have to make an educated guess as to when prototypes such as this will appear in showrooms, that info also was revealed by the dash sticker. Expect this awesomest of factory Camaros for the 2012 model year. We predict a Detroit auto show reveal in January, and expect sales to commence by the fall of next year.

Chevrolet Cruze Sales Pass 270,000 as U.S. Introduction Nears

Even before the first models reach U.S. Dealers, the Chevrolet Cruze is among the fastest-growing nameplates in the world with sales rising an average of 18 percent per month.

Internationally, customers have purchased 140,000 Cruze in the first six months of 2010 and a total of 270,000 since Cruze launched in the spring of 2009 in Europe, followed by other major markets, such as China in summer of 2009.

Cruze is currently available in more than 60 countries, with China, Russia, Mexico, India and Spain as the top five sales markets. Including Holden and Daewoo versions sold in Australia and South Korea, total sales exceed 340,000 vehicles across five continents.

Cruze will begin arriving at U.S. dealerships in September. With U.S. models produced in Lordstown, Ohio, Cruze will be the only compact car build in the U.S. for the 2011 model year. Chevrolet Dominates the Brickyard

This past weekend's NASCAR Brickyard 400 provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the new energy at Chevrolet, to consumers and dealers. On and off the track, Chevy dominated.

Jamie McMurray (Target Chip Ganassi Racing) drove his #1 Chevrolet Impala to the win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, marking just the third time that a driver has won the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard in the same season. Team Chevy drivers took a remarkable nine of the top 10 spots in qualifying, led by pole-winner Juan Pablo Montoya.

Off the track, Chevrolet used one of racing's signature events to showcase its new products. A 70,000 sq.-ft. Chevrolet exhibit greeted the hundreds of thousands of fans attending at Indianapolis over the weekend. More that 1,100 test drives of Chevy cars and trucks were conducted on a special 1.9-mile course set up inside the Speedway grounds. Race fans could attend special Q&A and autograph sessions at the display's stage with top Team Chevy drivers, including Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Also, Chevy hosted an Owner Appreciation Day for roughly 200 Camaro and Corvette owners from local markets in Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. These lucky owners drove their new Chevy performance cars for a parade lap around the Brickyard. A special 2011 Corvette Grand Sport was the official pace car for the Brickyard 400.

Smart Phones Do GM Key-Fob Job

Drivers of most 2011 General Motors Co. vehicles will be able to use a smart phone to carry out functions usually found on a key fob, such as remote starting, activating the horn and lights, and remote locking and unlocking of doors.

Using a mobile phone means features can be controlled regardless of the driver's distance from the car. For instance, a traveler who forgets to lock the car at the airport can send a locking signal from the terminal. OnStar subscribers will be able to get diagnostic information via phone, such as fuel tank level, remaining oil life, recommended tire pressure and average mile per gallon driven.

Patent Drawings Reveal 2012 Chevrolet Aveo Sedan

The public got its first look at the all-new 2012 Chevrolet Aveo at this year's Detriot Auto Show, but the RS Concept was only shown as a five-door hatchback, and as we all know, four-door sedans remain the preferred form factor here in the U.S.A. Newly discovered patent reveals the look of the three-box Aveo, which remains the same as the hatch from B-pillar backwards, but carries a few more interesting design cues.

The roof-line of the Aveo sedan has a similar profile to the larger Cruze and from the side, the tail-lights have the same triangular shape. From the rear, the horizontally arranged lights of the Cruze are replaced by vertically stacked lamps and the sedan gets conventional rear door handles in place of the hidden units in the C-pillar of the hatch. The production Chevy Aveo should arrive sometime during this upcoming auto show season, with production starting in the first half of 2011 at GM's Lake Orion assembly plant north of Detroit.

Corvette Goes On Air After 5-year Hiatus

General Motors debuted the first commercial featuring the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 last week at the MLB All-Star games. This is the first television ad for the Corvette in more than five years.

This ad comes days after GM announced a “build your own engine option” for Corvette enthusiasts. GM said this program is believed to be the world’s most hands-on super car program, customers who order a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 can choose an option to help assemble their cars’ LS7 or LS9 engines at General Motors’ Performance Build Center (PBC) in Wixom, Mich. In addition to building their own engines, Corvette buyers can attend driving school in Arizona or Nevada, take delivery of their vehicles at the National Corvette Museum or watch their vehicles being built at the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Engine Build Experience is an option with a suggested retail price of $5,800. When a customer selects the PBC option for a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 and the dealer submits the order to Chevrolet, a special concierge contacts the customer to verify participation and help coordinate arrangements. While travel arrangements to and from Metro Detroit are the customer’s responsibility, the Chevrolet concierge helps schedule the engine build; coordinates the customer’s activities at the Performance Build Center; assists with booking local lodging and meals, and arranges local transportation.

The Engine Build experience is the latest program Chevy offers for Corvette owners. Other programs include:

• Corvette plant tour, where customers can follow their vehicle down the Bowling Green assembly line
  

• Corvette Museum delivery, where customers take delivery of their new Corvette at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green

Chevrolet Supports Fireball Run Adventurally®

Chevrolet is joining the fourth annual Fireball Run Adventurally to benefit the nation’s largest missing child recovery effort. Chevrolet will provide support vehicles for the 3,500-mile rally, as well as sponsoring a team competing in a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS.

Each team in the Fireball Run represents a missing child identified by the Race to Recover America’s Missing Children, a campaign for the Klaas Kids Foundation. While adventuring and competing, teams work to distribute 1,000 posters along the entire 3,500 mile route of the rally, which journeys through 18 cities and nine states in eight days. To date, the Fireball Run has contributed to the recovery of 35 missing children.

“The Fireball Run is a unique event that combines the excitement of an interactive road rally and the challenge of track competitions, with the benefit of a worthy cause,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “As such, it’s a great fit for Chevy.”

In addition to sponsoring the Camaro SS team, Chevrolet will loan the Fireball Run a Corvette Grand Sport convertible as the pace vehicle, and Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrids as safety support vehicles for the contestants. The Fireball Run starts on Sept. 23 in Henderson, Nev., and concludes in Galena, Illinois on Oct. 2.

2011 Chevrolet Caprice PPV Detective Package Details Uncovered

A new generation of police cruisers is afoot. We've seen General Motors open the floodgates with a full raft of images of its Caprice PPV. Chevrolet has taken a traditional approach, fitting the Caprice with a 6.0-liter V8 cranking out 355 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

We already knew what to expect for the standard police-spec Caprice, but we've been extra curious about the special “Detective package” that adds some plainclothes stealthiness to the Caprice, especially as it seems to hint at what the oft-rumored civilian version of this car might look like. It's available in seven different colors, uses all the same mechanical underpinnings as the standard Police PPV, and for the moment at least, remains unavailable in a retail model.

Obama Gets First Seat Time in Chevrolet Volt

President Checks Out Electric Car During Visit to Michigan

President Barack Obama got his first exposure and seat time Thursday in the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range capability during a visit to the Compact Power battery plant in Holland, Mich. LG Chem, the parent of Compact Power, is making the battery cells for the Volt, which goes on sale late this year in California, the Washington, D.C. area, and Michigan.

The Volt has a range of about 340 miles and is powered with electricity at all times. For up to the first 40 miles, the Volt is powered solely by electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery, using no fuel and producing no emissions. When the Volt’s lithium-ion battery runs low, an engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 300 miles on a full tank of gas.

The Volt battery pack will be assembled in Brownstown Township, Mich., and shipped to the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant for mating with the Volt. Chevrolet announced Wednesday the Volt battery will have a standard eight-year, 100,000 mile warranty.

GM Says Volt Battery System Will Have 8-Year, 100,000-mile Warranty

General Motors Co., preparing to launch the first U.S. mass-market plug-in hybrid, will offer buyers of its Chevrolet Volt an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the lithium-ion battery's 161 components. The warranty also includes the battery's thermal management system, charging system and electric-drive components.

The Volt, which goes on sale in October or November, can run for up to 40 miles on battery power before it switches to power from a gasoline-powered engine. A battery can charge in 8 to 10 hours on 120-volt power or about four hours through a 240-volt hookup. GM intends for the warranty length to give customers confidence in the Volt's unfamiliar plug-in technology, said Micky Bly, GM's executive director of global electrical systems, today at GM's battery plant in Brownstown Township, Mich.

“It's one less question for the dealer,” Bly said. GM has not announced the warranty for the Volt's gasoline-powered engine, but Bly said it would be at least as long as GM's standard five years or 100,000 miles.

The Volt battery's longevity stems in large part from the liquid heating and cooling system that keeps the battery at optimal temperatures. The Volt is the only such mass-market vehicle with a liquid-powered thermal management system, GM said.

The Brownstown plant has been building prototypes for Volts since January and will soon start batteries that will go on vehicles destined for customers' garages.

Chevrolet Takes Showroom App to iPhone, iPad, and iTouch

Chevrolet is among the first automakers to create a shopping app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad which allows users to research and locate the vehicle they desire.

The Chevrolet Showroom app, available now for free on the App Store, features the entire line of Chevrolet cars, trucks and crossovers. It allows users to pick interior and exterior colors and search for a matching vehicle in a nearby dealer’s inventory.

“The Chevrolet Showroom app allows customers to shop nearly anywhere and share their virtual vehicle with their friends,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “This is a natural addition to the ways people shop online for vehicles today.”

Once a vehicle has been located, users can save it to their device and share it with friends and family via e-mail or Facebook. The click-to-call feature also easily allows customers to call their local Chevrolet dealer for more information. Users also can request a quote from the dealership through the app.

The current version of the app includes a Featured Gallery with historical photos and highlights of the 75 years of Suburban and some of the most memorable Corvettes.

The application also incorporates a dealer locator, current offers and incentives down to the trim level of the chosen vehicle as well as a convenient payment and affordability calculator.

CNG Process for Full-Size Van Nears Completion

General Motors has finalized the production process for its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered Chevrolet Express full-size van, allowing the company to deliver fleet customers complete vehicles with a fully integrated and dedicated CNG fuel system starting this fall.

GM announced in May that it would be the only manufacturer to offer a one-source van CNG option, allowing its customers to focus on their business rather thn on contracting the conversion of their vehicles.

“Our focus from the beginning has been to offer fleet customers a simple 'check the box' approach with our CNG Chevrolet Express vans,” said Brian Small, general manager, GM Fleet and Commercial Operations. “Our robust production process is a key enabler and certainly separates us from any competitive offering.”

The van will meet all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) emission certification requirements, and will b e fully compliant with applicable motor vehicle safety standards.

Each CNG Chevrolet Express van also will be covered by GM's three-year, 36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty and five-year, 100,000-mile limited Powertrain warranty.

GM's Global Powertrain and Vehicle Engineering Centers are being leveraged to bring their global expertise in gaseous fuel systems together for this vehicle system. Providing fleets with a convenient, all-in-one CNG vehicle begins with GM's Vortex 6.0L V8 engine. Gm engineers modified this proven power plant with hardened exhaust valves, and intake and exhaust valves seats for improved wear resistance and durability with gaseous fuel systems.

These hardened engines will then be assembled into the Chevrolet Express vans at GM's Wentzville, MO. plant.

Corvette Buyers Build the Engine for Their Cars

Chevrolet Corvette buyers can already take delivery of their car at the National Corvette Museum, get professional driver training and watch their cars being built. Now, General Motors Co. will let them build the engine.

GM is offering buyers of the 2011 Corvette ZR1 and Z06 models the chance to build the engines for their cars. For a suggested retail price of $5,800, plus the cost of getting to Detroit, a Corvette buyer is welcome to GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., where engines for the ZR1 and the Z06 are built by hand.

The Engine Build Experience package includes a concierge service that will set up most of the arrangements.

Buyers who select the option will work side-by-side with professionals at the Performance Build Center. Together they will build up an engine, starting with a bare block and moving through a series of assembly stations. Virtually all of the work is done by hand, with minimal automated assistance.

At the end of the line, the engine is test run on a dynamometer and the builder adds a personalized nameplate. Then the engine is sent to the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky., for installation in the car.

Another perk: Whether built by the customer or by the professional technician, the engine from the Performance Build Center is covered by a five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Great Finish for Phillips Chevrolet Car

Phillips Chevrolet of Frankfort, Illinois joined driver Mike Bliss and the Key Motorsports team for 200 laps of NASCAR Nationwide Series action at Chicagoland Speedway in last Friday's Dollar General 300 powered by Coca-Cola.

Mike Bliss's car was sponsored by Phillips Chevrolet. The number 40 car started the race in 31^st position. He was running in the middle of the pack the whole race and he said his car felt a little loose. Towards the end of the race he mentioned the car was running the best it had all day. Unfortunately, Bliss was involved in a large car wreck on the last lap where he gladly finished 18^th out of 43 drivers.

Phillips Chevrolet of Frankfort, Illinois joins driver Mike Bliss and the Key Motorsports team for 200 laps of NASCAR Nationwide Series action at Chicagoland Speedway in Friday's Dollar General 300 powered by Coca-Cola. Car number 40 is primed for an aggressive performance in the mid-west after a steady run at Daytona last week.

“We want to thank Phillips Chevrolet for stepping on board with Key Motorsports this weekend at Chicagoland,” team owner, Curtis stated. “They are quality people who represent a quality brand. We are excited to be working with them. The team has gone the extra mile this week preparing the car, and we are expecting a good showing for Phillips Chevrolet.”

Key Motorsports crew chief, Gary Showalter, hopes the additional effort will pay off on Friday. “The guys have worked hard, the car is ready, and Mike likes the Chicagoland Speedway. We want a top-10 this week,” said Showalter.

Key Motorsports performed well at Chicagoland in the series only 2009 appearance at the 1.5-mile tri-oval, finishing 15^th in the 43-car starting field. Bliss finished 9^th in the same event piloting a Phoenix Racing entry.

Next Chevrolet Corvette to get 440-hp 5.5-liter small-block V8

According to Motor Trend, which is citing unnamed sources within General Motors, the next-generation Corvette will come with a brand-new engine. Despite rumors to the contrary, it seems that Chevrolet's halo vehicle will continue using its trademark V8 engine and not a V6. Still, the C7's powerplant will be downsized from its current 6.2 and 7.0 liters.

It's likely that this new engine will be the first application of GM's next-gen small block family, and we'd expect it to sport direct injection, E85 capability and a new combustion system design. One thing not to expect, though: overhead cams. You can bank on the fact that The General will stick to its tried-and-true overhead valve design, which serves to lower manufacturing costs and allows for comparatively small overall engine dimensions.

All of these technologies should make the venerable V8 more fuel efficient and cleaner, but also sufficiently powerful to uphold its sportscar heritage. In fact, Motor Trend reports that the C7's V8 will displace 5.5 liters while hammering out 440 horsepower. Though that significantly smaller in displacement, the power figure would actually be up from the current 430 ponies. We can hardly wait... but we'll have to anyway. We don't expect the next Corvette to bow before 2012 at the earliest.
