An Insider's Peek at the Volt

The ultimate Chevrolet Volt insiders -- Tony Posawatz, vehicle line director, and John Hughes, Chevrolet marketing manager answered hot questions yesterday during an employee web chat. These were the highlights:

-- Using a 120 volt outlet, the Chevy Volt only takes about 10 hours to recharge compared to competitor’s 18 hours.

-- With Volt, there is no range anxiety. The battery provides up to 40 miles of gas and emissions-free driving. If you can't charge the Volt's battery, the generator powered by a gasoline engine seamlessly turns on to provide up to 300 additional miles of range.

- GM is working to put together a very streamlined charging installation for 240 volt charging. Although the Volt can be charged with any dedicated 120 volt outlet, some people will want this option for faster charging. More information will be available in September.

-- Volt can save its drivers 500 gallons of gas a year. At approximate $3 a gallon, that represents a $1,500 savings. Combine that with the $350 lease payment and that gets the monthly payment below $250.
