Chevrolet Volt named AUTOMOBILE Magazine 2011 Automobile of the Year

The Chevrolet Volt is the AUTOMOBILE Magazine 2011 Automobile of the Year. The award will be presented to Joel Ewanick, GM U.S. Marketing Vice President, on Wednesday at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.
In naming the Volt their Automobile of the Year, AUTOMOBILE Magazineeditors wrote:
“This is the most sophisticated, most important vehicle on the road today. It won’t just change what we drive, but also how we drive. Owners will plug in at night, heat or cool their cabin before they leave the garage, and adopt new driving styles to maximize their electric range. Then, when the battery is depleted, they’ll mindlessly motor on; free of the limitations that accompanies pure electric vehicles.”
As the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle with extended range, the Volt has a total driving range of about 350 miles. For the first 25 to 50 miles, the Volt drives gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gasoline-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range more than 300 miles on a full tank.
“We are very grateful for this prestigious recognition from AUTOMOBILE Magazine,” said Ewanick, who drove a Volt 2,394 miles from Detroit to Los Angeles for the show. “Automobile of the Year is a testament to the pioneering technology of the Volt, as well as the talent, intelligence and hard work of everyone at GM who made it a reality.”
The Volt was first shown as a concept in January, 2007 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. In June of that year, GM’s Board of Directors approved the start of product development for the Volt and the Voltec electric propulsion system.
In September, 2008, the production version of the Volt debuted during GM’s Centennial celebration. This month, retail production of the Chevrolet begins at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, with the first retail customer deliveries in December.
The full report from AUTOMOBILE Magazine appears in the January issue of the magazine (on newsstands in early-December) and online at www.automobilemagazine.com.
Chevrolet last received the AUTOMOBILE Magazine Automobile of the Year in 2001 for the Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

Chevrolet Volt Named 2011 Green Car of the Year

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt electric car with extended-range capability today was named Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year®. The Volt is the first electric vehicle to win the award.
“This has been a long time coming,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com.  “The electric vehicles that were test marketed in the 1990s tantalized us, but were without a solid business case.  What a difference a decade makes.”
The Volt runs purely on electricity for 25 to 50 miles on a single charge before a 1.4-liter gasoline engine/generator seamlessly engages to create electricity to drive the wheels for an additional 300 miles on a full tank of gas. The Volt’s extended-range capability addresses the range anxiety concerns associated with battery-only electric vehicles.
"The Green Car of the Year® award validates the Chevrolet team's promise to deliver a practical electric vehicle," said Joel Ewanick, General Motors vice president, U.S. Marketing, who drove a Volt 2,394 miles from Detroit to the Los Angeles International Auto Show, where he accepted the award Thursday. "The Volt's a transformational technology that will lead our industry into a new age of vehicle electrification."
Other finalists for Green Car honors were: the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, and Nissan LEAF. The Green Car of the Year® jury was comprised of six environmental and automotive experts along with Green Car Journal editors.
The Chevrolet Tahoe 2-Mode Hybrid is a previous winner of the Green Car award.

Chevrolet Helps Get 11,000 Hours Talk Time for Soldiers

Eleven thousand hours of talk time won’t bring far away relatives physically closer, but it can go a long way in curing homesickness for soldiers overseas.
Chevrolet’s efforts in the Cell Phones for Soldiers program so far has helped collect 20,000 cell phones, more than enough to provide 2,200 pre-paid calling cards with 300 minutes each to a group of soldiers in Afghanistan.
“These cards will provide our camp population with six months worth of calls, more than enough to call home for every holiday or family event from Thanksgiving to Mother’s Day,” said Col. Liana L. Bratland, Director of Human Resources/CJ1 for NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan/Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. “That connection to home is a big morale booster for the troops and their families.”
As an extension of the GM Military Discount Program, Chevrolet has been supporting Cell Phones for Soldiers since May. To date, Chevrolet has helped collect more phones for the cause at collection boxes in a variety of locations from General Motors headquarters to auto shows around the country.
In the days leading to Thanksgiving, Chevy is partnering with the Livonia Public Schools in suburban Detroit to host a contest among six schools to see which can collect the most used cell phones. Chevy is providing an additional 2, 000 prepaid calling cards and that students can send to troops serving overseas.
“Many of our own students have family members who have served overseas,” said Dr. Randy Liepa, Superintendent of Livonia Public Schools. “We look forward to working with Cell Phones for Soldiers and Chevrolet to support the families who are sacrificing their holidays to serve our country.”
All phones collected for Cell Phones for Soldiers are recycled, and the proceeds are used to purchase prepaid calling cards for members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The registered 501(C)3 was founded in 2004 by brother and sister Robbie and Brittany Bergquist.  To date, they have provided more than 60 million minutes of free calling cards through a national network of individual and corporate supporters.

Chevrolet Invests in Clean Energy Projects Across America

Chevrolet announced today that it will invest $40 million in various clean energy projects throughout America with a goal to reduce 8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The initiative is based on projects that promote energy savings, renewable energy, responsible use of natural resources and conservation in communities across the United States.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 8 million metric tons equals the CO2 emissions of one year of electricity use in 970,874 homes or the annual carbon reduction from 1.7 million acres of pine forest.
Chevrolet’s clean energy investments to be implemented in the next three to five years may include projects such as:
  •       Providing energy efficient technology such as smart energy sensors and solar panels to schools and other community-based facilities in need of upgrades to decrease carbon dioxide emissions and reduce heating bills.
  •      Supporting wind farms and solar projects that deliver renewable energy to the grid and also help family farms increase their revenues per acre.
  •      Capturing flammable methane from community landfills that delivers clean energy to the grid and improves local air quality and safety.
  •      Contributing to forestry projects throughout America.

“GM has made great progress in reducing our environmental impact, but we know we can do more,” said General Motors CEO Dan Akerson.  “Chevrolet’s investment is an extension of the environmental initiatives we’ve been undertaking for years because the solution to global environmental challenges goes beyond just vehicles.
“This is an opportunity to connect with Chevy customers through clean energy projects that directly impact them,” Akerson said
GM estimates its new carbon-reduction goal equates to the emissions in 2011 from driving the 1.9 million vehicles Chevrolet is expected to sell in the United States over the next year.
“Chevy is an iconic emblem of America and it is a big deal that it is stepping forward to address one of our greatest challenges – moving us toward a low-carbon future,” said Eileen Claussen, president of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. “Chevy is clearly demonstrating that companies can act now and help propel clean energy solutions.”
Since 1990, GM has decreased its manufacturing emissions by 60 percent. GM also has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to build fuel-efficient vehicles like the Chevrolet Cruze Eco, which gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway, and the Chevy Volt electric car with extended-range capability. The Volt allows 25-50 miles of pure electric driving on a single charge after which a small gasoline engine/generator creates electricity for an additional 300 miles.
“Chevy’s Volt and its clean energy investment both exemplify the bold leadership businesses can take today to address our changing climate,” Claussen said.” Its commitment to community-focused clean energy and energy efficiency investments will drive change and increase awareness across the country.”
Other GM initiatives include reducing water use by nearly 35 percent between 2005 and 2009 at manufacturing facilities worldwide; decreasing fossil fuel at GM plants by using landfill gas, hydro and solar power; recycling 90 percent of the waste the company generates; and operating 75 landfill-free facilities, more than half of its manufacturing plants globally.
Chevy will be making investments through third-party organizations such as Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Ore. To define project criteria and the program’s investment portfolio, GM has engaged environmental experts, non-government organizations and academics through the Climate Neutral Business Network. Advisors include:
  •       Bob Sheppard, vice president of corporate programs at Clean Air-Cool Planet
  •       Derik Broekhoff, vice president of policy at Climate Action Reserve
  •       Mark Kenber, deputy CEO at The Climate Group
  •       Snehall Desai, Sustainability Marketer
  •       Janet Peace, vice president at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change
  •       Eban Goodstein, director of the Center for Environmental Policy, Bard College

“Chevy understands that to lead in the environmental arena it needs to collaborate with experts from outside its industry,” said Goodstein.  “Their engagement of NGOs and academia in development of the scope and strategy of this initiative shows their commitment to projects that will make the most impact across America’s communities.”

Testing Under Way on Production-Intent System for 2015 Commercialization

General Motors Co. is testing a production-intent hydrogen fuel cell system that can be packaged in the space of a traditional four-cylinder engine and be ready for commercial production in 2015.
The system is half the size, 220 pounds lighter and uses about a third of the platinum of the system in the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell electric vehicles used in Project Driveway, the world’s largest market test and demonstration fleet of fuel cell electric vehicles that began in late 2007 and has amassed nearly 1.3 million miles of everyday driving in cities around the world.
“Our learning from Project Driveway has been tremendous and these vehicles have been very important to our program,” Charles Freese, executive director of GM's Global Fuel Cell Activities told reporters Tuesday at a news briefing on GM’s fuel cell progress.
“The 30 months we committed to the demonstration are winding down, but we will keep upgrades of these vehicles running and will continue learning from them while we focus efforts on the production-intent program for 2015.
”Some of the 119 fuel cell electric vehicles in Project Driveway will receive hardware and software upgrades and will become part of a technology demonstration program with the U.S. Department of Energy. Others will be driven by businesses and a few will be used to continue showing that, with proper fueling infrastructure, hydrogen fuel cells are a viable alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles.
“We will continue to use the Project Driveway fleet strategically to advance fuel cell technology, hydrogen infrastructure, and GM's vehicle electrification goals,” Freese said.
The first long-term loan of the new-look Chevy fuel cell vehicle will be to Stephanie White, a fuel cell advocate who was among the first Project Driveway participants and regularly blogs on her vision for a hydrogen economy in which zero-pollution fuel cells are a mainstream source of transportation. Freese presented White with the keys to the car on Tuesday.“
Driving the Chevy fuel cell around LA has been an amazing experience,” White said. “People are always stopping me to ask questions about the vehicle and I tell them how powerful and eco-friendly it is.”

2011 Chevy Camaro convertible is braced and ready to roll

A power folding top, the addition of structural braces and the same powertrain lineup as that found in the coupe are the key selling points of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible.

The drop-top Camaro, which gets a formal debut at the Los Angeles auto show on Wednesday, goes on sale in February. The Camaro convertible will have a base price of $30,000, including the destination charge.

The Camaro convertible will be available in LT and SS trim levels, the same as the Camaro coupe. The base engine is a 3.6-liter V-6, rated at 312 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, mated to either an Aisin six-speed manual transmission or a General Motors Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission.

The Camaro convertible SS is powered by a 6.2-liter V-8. Cars equipped with the Tremec TR 6060 six-speed manual will use GM's LS3 engine, rated at 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The Camaro SS equipped with a GM Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic uses the L99 engine, rated at 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque.

About that top

The Camaro's folding top operates similarly to the folding top on the Chevrolet Corvette. A twist of a handle at the front edge of the top releases it from the windshield header. The driver then pushes a button, which stows the top behind the rear seats and lowers the windows.

Chevy says it takes about 20 seconds to lower the top, which is made from canvas material and uses a headliner to dampen road noise.

While the Camaro architecture was originally engineered to include a convertible version, the loss of the coupe roof prompted engineers to add some braces to counteract steering-wheel and cowl shake. The Camaro convertible gets:

• A brace that connects the front strut towers.

• A reinforcement brace for the transmission support.

• V-shaped braces at the front and rear of the underbody.

• A brace for the underbody tunnel.

Engineers also added a hydroformed tube inside the Camaro's A-pillars and a reinforcement bracket inside the windshield header, and they reinforced the rocker panels and front hinge pillars to cut down on noise, vibration and harshness.

The changes keep the Camaro convertible body stiff enough that engineers used the suspension bushings and springs with the same stiffness as the components used on the Camaro coupe, instead of selecting softer settings to quell vibrations.
