Power to the People – Chevrolet Unplugs Volt and Hits the Road

Cross-country drive brings the Chevrolet Volt directly to consumers

A caravan of Chevrolet Volts will embark on a 3,400-mile, cross-country drive showcasing how easy it will be to live with the world’s first electric vehicle with extended-range capability.
The tour, dubbed “Volt Unplugged,” will give consumers an opportunity to test-drive the Volt, meet the people behind the development of the vehiclesChevrolet engineers, designers and others – and participate in activities at each stop.
"The Volt Unplugged tour will give people a chance to get behind the wheel of the Volt and find out for themselves what makes this vehicle so special," said Tony DiSalle, Chevrolet Volt product and marketing director. “This drive will demonstrate the one-of-a-kind capabilities of the Volt, the only electric vehicle able to drive such long distances under a variety of driving conditions and climates without having to stop to recharge.”
The tour is similar to July’s “Freedom Drive,” where the Volt completed a three-day 1,776-mile drive from Austin, Texas to New York City to demonstrate the Volt’s extended-range capability. Stops on the Volt Unplugged tour include:
·         Oct. 9 and 10 – Seattle
·         Oct. 13 and 14 – San Francisco
·         Oct. 16 - 18 – Los Angeles
·         Oct. 20 – San Diego
·         Oct. 22 and 23 – San Antonio
·         Oct. 24 and 25 –  Houston
·         Oct. 28 and 29 – Miami
·         Oct. 30 – Orlando
·         Oct. 29 and 30 – Washington, D.C.
·         Nov. 1 – Raleigh, N.C.
·         Nov. 5 - 7 – New York City
·         Nov. 18 - 20 – Chicago

Along the drive, Chevrolet representatives will reach out to local community leaders, schools and consumers to educate each group about the one-of-a-kind characteristics of the Volt and discuss the progress of the nation’s electrical infrastructure.  There will also be many opportunities to sit in and/or drive one of six Volts that will be on tour.
On a fully charged battery and tank of gas, the Volt has a driving range of hundreds of miles. Because the Volt can use gasoline to create its own electricity in extended-range mode, long trips are possible. The Volt is powered only from electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery for a typical range of 25 to 50 miles depending on terrain, driving technique, temperature and battery age. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas engine-generator seamlessly engages to extend the driving range.
The Chevrolet Volt starts production at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck facility this fall and will be sold in California, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan and Washington D.C. Quantities will be limited.  The Volt will be sold nationwide about 12-18 months after start of production.
The Volt’s Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price is $41,000 ($33,500 net of the full federal tax credit, which ranges from $0-$7,500) including a destination freight charge of $720. GM expects to offer qualified lessees a price as low as $350/month with $2,500 down at lease signing, including security deposit based on current conditions, which could vary at time of delivery. The benefit of the $7,500 tax credit is included in the reduced lease payment, with the tax credit going to the lessor. The lease term is 36 months with 12,000 miles per year.

The 21st century rebirth of the Chevrolet Camaro opens a new chapter when the 2011 Camaro Convertible premieres at the Los Angeles International Auto Show on Nov. 17.
The Camaro Convertible will arrive in Chevrolet showrooms in February 2011. Starting price will be $30,000, including $850 destination. (Full details will be released later this year.)

The standard model will have a 312-hp Direct Injection V6 engine featuring 29 miles per gallon on the highway. The SS model will feature the 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 426 hp. Chevy Volt’s first customers will be 15-person Customer Advisory Board

Lyle Dennis. Bill Nye. Jim Woolsey. Brian Wynne. What do these people have in common? They are all members of the new Chevrolet Volt Customer Advisory Board that General Motors announced today.

So, what will the 15 people who make up the board actually do? Basically, they're getting a
Volt before you do and will tell GM what's working and what isn't. More specifically, they will be the first people who get to, "experience the Volt every day under real-world conditions during a three-month vehicle and charging evaluation program starting in late October."

The 15 volunteered for the position and
Chevy picked people who knew the most about electric vehicles and also happen to live in one of the initial markets where the Volt will be available. Besides getting a three-month test vehicle, board members will get a free 240-volt charging station, "for the duration of the vehicle evaluation program."

400 Car Seat Check Ups Planned During Child Passenger Safety Week

As part of awareness for National Child Passenger Safety Week and in partnership with the GM Foundation, Safe Kids Buckle Up – the child passenger safety program of Safe Kids USA – has inspected 1.28 million car seats; held approximately 65,000 car seat checkup events around the country; donated more than 457,000 car seats to families in need and educated more than 21 million parents and caregivers.

Research shows that as children age, they are less likely to be in the appropriate child safety seat for their age and weight,” said Torine Creppy, director of Safe Kids USA Buckle Up programs.  “Safe Kids USA would like to change that by helping assure that each child in a vehicle is properly protected.  Every child deserves to grow up safely, and we are pleased to work through our coalitions at the state and local levels to promote and improve child safety in
vehicles during this week."

13 Straight Months of Perfect Customer Satisfaction

Phillips Chevrolet's sales consultant, Brian Kramer, has just hit his 13 month in a row of receiving a 4.0 Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI)! That's the best you can get! Think of it as a grade point average back when you were in high school. This means he has not had one bad complaint in a year!!

This accomplishment has never been done and is very unprecedented. Kramer started his first day here at Phillips Chevrolet back in 1998, but has been in the car business since 1973. Now, he's exceeding expectations and selling on average 15 cars a month! "Some of the biggest reasons [Kramer] accomplished this is due to his hard work, diligent follow up and great customer service," Phillips Chevrolet's General Manager, Mike Maheras, stated. "It takes a lot of hard work and hours. Brian Kramer is very dedicated to this job."

Chevrolet Fuel Cell Equinox Joins Expo 2010 VIP Fleet

Demonstrate Promise of Electric Vehicles

Two Chevrolet Fuel Cell Equinox vehicles were presented today to the Shanghai World Expo Bureau for use in the VIP fleet at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
The two vehicles will shuttle special guests at Shanghai's Expo Park while introducing GM's vision of sustainable mobility to government officials, industry leaders and members of the academic community, stimulating dialogue on the future of urban transportation.

Equipped with GM's most-advanced fuel cell propulsion system to date, the Fuel Cell
Equinox is a fully functional crossover vehicle. It generates no greenhouse gases and its only tailpipe emission is water vapor.

"The Fuel Cell
Equinox will demonstrate the promise of fuel cell vehicles and provide a window into GM's vision of a future that is free from petroleum and emissions," said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. "Fuel cell vehicles offer one of the best solutions for the transportation challenges facing our society today.

"They represent a building block for the electrification technology that is part of GM's vision of future urban transportation, which is being introduced at our Expo 2010 pavilion," Wale said. "It also demonstrates GM's commitment to World Expo 2010 Shanghai as a global automobile partner."

The Fuel Cell
Equinoxes join the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability, which earlier this month joined the Expo 2010 VIP fleet, as well as the 350 Buick LaCrosse Eco-Hybrid cars, which are part of the official Expo 2010 taxi fleet showing visitors from around the world the possibilities that exist today regarding electric vehicles.

Since 2007, GM has deployed more than 100 Fuel Cell
Equinoxes on the road in the U.S., Europe and Asia through Project Driveway. More than 80,000 people in New York, Washington, D.C., and Greater Los Angeles have volunteered to drive the vehicles. The vehicles have already covered more than 1.4 million miles. The program is providing valuable feedback on the real-world application of fuel cell vehicles.

The Fuel Cell
Equinox, Volt and LaCrosse Eco-Hybrid also joined GM's EN-V concept vehicle at the SAIC-GM Pavilion. They represent GM's commitment to electrification and pursuing multiple pathways to sustainable urban mobility.

Caprice ranks fastest 2011 police car tests

The team behind General Motors Co.'s new police car is pleased with preliminary test results showing the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle is fastest among 2011 models. The Caprice, which returns to the police market after 15 years, was up against its competitors in annual testing by the Michigan State Police Precision Driving Unit. The results serve as a buyer's guide for police organizations for fleet purchases.

Testing began Saturday, September 18 and wrapped up Monday, September 20, attracting as many as 500 people each day as the cars went through their paces. The results are preliminary; final evaluations are expected to be released in November.

The Caprice notched the fastest 0-to-60 miles-per-hour time, as well as 0-to-100 mph and had the top speed at 148 mph. "We have the fastest car, best brakes, largest interior and most comfort," said Dana Hammer, Chevrolet manager of law enforcement vehicles. "Our goal was to be the leader."

One of the Caprice’s competitors, which also has a V-8 engine, came in second in many of the performance categories. No one from that group was available for comment Tuesday. Another competitor brought prototypes of its 2012 model Interceptors with a turbocharged V-6 as the top engine. "I'm tickled to death to see all of the manufacturers back into police cars in a big way after a period of stagnation," said Jerry Newberry, fleet manager for the Texas Dept. of Public Safety which buys about 1,000 vehicles annually.

OnStar Encourages Hands-Free Calling Choices

OnStar is launching a Bluetooth/Hands-Free Calling awareness campaign to help simplify the process of pairing cell phones to the hands-free technology.

An analysis of random, anonymous data collected from thousands of vehicles indicates only 45 percent of
Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac owners are pairing their cellular phones to a vehicle's Bluetooth system, raising concerns that customers are unaware of the feature in their vehicle or believe connecting to be too difficult a process.

"What we're learning is that many customers simply do not understand the technology, or they're confused by how to pair their cell phone to a Bluetooth device," said OnStar President Chris Preuss. "It's about both educating the customer and alleviating technical challenges."

A new website,
www.gm.com/handsfree, has been launched to provide clear instructions on how to pair specific devices. The site offers two ways to stay connected in most Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles: OnStar Hands-Free Calling or built-in Bluetooth connectivity. Through interactive features, consumers select their vehicle and mobile device to receive specific instructions on how to pair their device to the vehicle.

"There's no question that cellular device use in the vehicle is and will continue to be one of the biggest safety challenges facing society," Preuss said. "Technology will play a key role in mitigating this impact, but we cannot over-assume engagement just because we provide the capability. This education and awareness campaign is designed to encourage use of hands-free technology because we take driver distraction and safety very seriously."

It's easy for
Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac customers to use hands-free technology. Bluetooth allows users to connect their mobile device to their vehicle and place and receive calls using steering wheel controls and voice recognition. The vehicle audio system allows users to hear the call through the speakers and respond using the built-in microphone. Once a phone is paired with Bluetooth, a customer's mobile device will automatically connect to the vehicle when the ignition is turned on.

OnStar Hands-Free Calling allows
OnStar subscribers to make calls from their vehicle using voice-activated dialing. Subscribers simply press the white phone icon button to dial a number by saying the number aloud or to answer an incoming call. Hands-Free Calling, with its externally mounted antennae, is specially designed for better reception and fewer dropped calls in remote areas and pockets of limited cellular reception.

Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle Out to Arrest Competition This Weekend

Chevrolet’s all-new Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) takes on the competition at the 2011 Police Vehicle Evaluation Program this weekend in Lansing, where the Michigan State Police Precision Driving Unit will run the vehicles through top speed, acceleration, braking, high-speed handling and other tests.

Hitting the streets next spring, the Caprice joins the front-wheel drive Impala PPV and Tahoe PPV, making Chevrolet the only manufacturer to offer a full range of police vehicles.

The full-size rear-wheel drive Caprice PPV delivers the performance, comfort and safety that today’s police departments need to help keep America's streets safe. The Caprice’s 6.0-liter V-8 is rated at an estimated 355 horsepower (265 kW) with 384 lb-ft of torque (521 Nm). It is also backed by a six-speed automatic transmission, which is performance-calibrated for police duty, and can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds.

A unique Performance Algorithm Liftfoot (PAL) calibration, within Sport shift mode, allows the transmission to “understand” the driving conditions and select the appropriate gear - even through tight turns - and provides the required engine torque.

With unmatched interior space and sculpted front seats to “pocket” an officer’s equipment belt, the Caprice PPV allows officers to do their jobs effectively with maximum comfort.

To help avoid crashes and prevent injuries, the Caprice PPV includes standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control with a special police calibration for aggressive driving maneuvers, and front seat-only head curtain air bags that enables the use of a full-width prisoner partition for greater officer safety.
