A Chevy wagon might look like this Opel

Mark Reuss raised some eyebrows at the recent New York auto show when he said a wagon version would make a nice companion to the redesigned Chevrolet Malibu that debuts next year. Reuss, president of GM North America, told journalists a Malibu wagon could be pitched as a fuel-efficient alternative to a minivan.

Reuss, president of General Motors North America, stopped short of saying a wagon is in the pipeline. But he made us wonder what one might look like.
Here's a clue: The Malibu shares a platform with the Buick Regal, and we've already seen a Regal wagon (sort of). It's called the Opel Insignia, and it's on sale in Europe.
The Regal and Insignia essentially are the same vehicle, which suggests another option for GM: As a Buick, that wagon might be an attractive choice for older minivan owners ready to try something completely different.

Camaro Named ‘Hottest Car’ in Inaugural SEMA Award

The Chevrolet Camaro has been named the “hottest car” at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The inaugural SEMA Award recognizes the most accessory-friendly new models, based on the number of vehicles exhibited at the show.

“A booth space is a ballot, and the models these exhibitors have selected represent their vote,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO.
According to SEMA, exhibitors manufacture thousands of products that improve performance, convenience, appearance and comfort. While products are available for every make and model vehicle, exhibitors are investing more into the Chevrolet Camaro than any other car. Consumers, therefore, can expect to find more options for personalizing their Camaro.
“More than any other venue, the cars exhibitors and attendees bring to SEMA embody the passion and excitement of car enthusiasts everywhere,” said John Fitzpatrick, Chevrolet Performance Cars marketing manager. “Based on the sheer number of Camaros displayed on the floor, and parked in the adjacent lots, the Camaro is clearly the hottest car of the show.”

OnStar- A Real Star

By Cleo Simmons, ALDA Chicago Style

I told Linda Belice, our wonderful editor; about my new car having OnStar with a TTY and that the TTY was the first one that the car dealer, Phillips Chevrolet, had ever installed! Linda asked if I would write and explain about OnStar and the TTY.

I never knew anything about OnStar. When I picked up my new Chevy Malibu, David, my son-in-law, actually drove my car. They said to press the blue button which is on the rear view mirror and an Advisor will explain all about the service. Well, David got to hear about all of the features and what it does. Having this little problem of being deaf, I still knew nothing. When we got home, David explained as much as he could. The dealership said they would send me an email and that I could go online to read about all of the features. I thought great but it better tell me how I can “hear” what the OnStar 24/7 Advisor is saying.

If you have never heard of OnStar or only know it by name, I’ll tell you what it does. If I have an accident (bit my tongue), the 24/7 OnStar staff will automatically send the police and an ambulance to the accident site. If I have not had an accident but need help, I can push the red OnStar button on the mirror and they will send help. If I lock my keys in the car, I can call and they can unlock the car. If my car is stolen, they know where it is and can slow the car down or even stop the car from starting.

If there is something wrong with my car, OnStar will email me a notice. I also receive a monthly email with a diagnostic test report on my car. In the first email, they advised me that my tires needed air, how much air was in them and what it should be. They also will tell me when it’s time to change my oil or any other maintenance that is needed. Can you imagine—I don’t even have to take the car in to know if it needs service!

On the email that I received, it said if you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, click here. Needless to say, that was me so I “clicked.” It explained that there is a 24/7 connection to an OnStar TTY Advisor available through the GM/Ultratec Compact TTY. We contacted the special number listed and they explained everything about the TTY and that the car dealer where I bought my car would handle everything, including the installation.

The TTY is now installed in my glove compartment. To connect to OnStar, I push the OnStar button and a TTY Advisor asks, “How can I help you?” Amazing! The guys at Phillips Chevy thought “this is cool.” Me too.

As far as cost, I paid the GM dealer $1,000 for the equipment and installation. I will be reimbursed through the GM Mobility Program. I already received a letter that it is being processed and I should receive my reimbursement check within six weeks.

There is also “icing on the cake.” Most new GM vehicles today come with one year of OnStar service free. My vehicle automatically qualifies for two additional years of the OnStar Safe & Sound Plan at no cost to me through the GM Mobility Program. This is approximately $400 in service costs FREE to me.

Chevy Volt owners get OnStar-powered website

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids like the 2011 Chevrolet Volt (and we'll let you decide which of those two categories General Motors' green halo car fits into...) promise to save drivers money on fuel bills. But, just as operating expenses for traditional cars rises and falls with the price of gas, so too will battery-powered cars vary in their running costs as electric utility rates fluctuate.

GM has announced a new website for
Chevrolet Volt owners called MyVolt.com that seeks to help consumers keep their electric charging rates in check. Statistics for battery usage and fuel economy will be transferred to the user's Facebook and Twitter accounts, and utility companies are expected to use this data to help owners choose times to plug their cars into the grid. These utility companies can also make sure their power grids are up to the challenge of keeping EVs on the road.

Other techy benefits offered to Volt owners include a display to show whether the car is plugged in (and whether it's charging at 120 or 240 volts), the creation of a charging schedule to make use of the best rates and the ability to monitor current battery state of charge and predicted range. One intriguing feature will allow OnStar to create its own charging schedule where the program will choose the lowest rates possible in order to achieve a full charge by a set time.

There will also be a provision to remotely start the Volt to get the interior up to a set temperature, and future updates will allow further customization of the car, such as setting radio presets. Want to know more? Check out the official press release after the break.

Michigan Readies as the U.S. Prepares for Electric Vehicles

More than 5,300 home and workplace charging stations to be installed on Michigan

More than 5,300 home and workplace charging stations are planned to be installed in Michigan as the state prepares for the introduction of new electric vehicle technology. General Motors and its partners are teaming up to help give Chevrolet Volt buyers more options for charging their vehicles.
DTE Energy pledges to install 2,500 240V home charging stations for plug-in vehicles, and Consumers Energy is matching that pledge.  The utilities will cover up to $2,500 of the cost of the charging station and installation. GM's Voltec 240 V home charging station is priced at just $490 plus an estimated $1,475 for installation.  The city of Lansing Board of Water and Light will provide an additional 25 charging stations to its customers and by the end of 2011, General Motors plans to have almost 350 charging stations in place for employees at its facilities in Michigan, with more than 100 already installed.
In addition, more than 1,500 Chevrolet dealers across the U.S. plan to install charging stations for use by customers. This number includes nearly 650 dealers that will soon begin selling the Volt in retail launch markets and approximately 900 others across the country that are authorized to provide service.
More important than the total volume of charging stations is where they will be located, according to Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman, Global Product Operations. “Since our homes may soon be our fueling stations of the future we believe the most important way to make communities 'plug-in ready' is by enabling residential charging.”
Most of these stations will be placed in consumers’ garages, carports and driveways.  A few will be strategically located, such as the two GM placed in front of its headquarters at the Renaissance Center at the building’s entrance off of Jefferson Ave in Detroit.  A total of 18 charging stations will be operational in and around the Renaissance Center within the next week.
“We think this opens up doors for those Volt owners who want to charge at work or who don’t have a place at home to charge the car overnight.  They’ll be able to drive electrically when they can, and they can drive on gasoline when they need to,” Stephens said in remarks at the Business of Plugging In Conference in Detroit on Tuesday.  “We see these stations as an incentive to our employees to join the Electric Vehicle movement … and as a demonstration to other businesses to encourage their own employees to drive greener.”
GM-installed charging stations for use by its employees in Michigan will include 34 at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly center where the Volt is built and 140 in the homes of employees driving early-build models for quality evaluation.
Many of the stations at GM facilities will be powered by renewable solar energy. The Detroit-Hamtramck assembly center already has 10 stations in place powered by photovoltaic systems from SunLogics Inc. Envision Solar International (OTCBB:EVSI) will provide its innovative Solar Tree® with EnvisionTrak™ system  for use at the Warren Technical Center and Milford Proving Ground.
GM envisioned the need for public and workplace charging stations in 2007 when it formed a collaboration with DTE, Consumers Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute and more than 50 other utilities. Many of those utilities are or will be launching similar programs to help customers prepare for electrification.
Michigan is one of nine regions in the United States identified by the U.S. Department of Energy to lead the electrification movement.  Free home charging stations provided by ECOtality and Coulomb Technologies will be available to 4,400 eligible Volt owners through a program funded by the DOE.
“We’ve put a lot of thought into the best way to enhance the electric vehicle experience,” Stephens said.  “We’ve focused on everything from vehicle-to-grid technical interfaces, codes and standards to leading consumer education and outreach.”
In fact, the Society of Engineers-approved industry standard for charging equipment was led by a GM engineer. And GM’s Opel subsidiary recently announced a vehicle-to-grid experiment in Germany involving a battery electric version of the Opel Meriva.

Volt test drive quiet, efficient -- and fun

Who knew a revolution could feel so normal?

That's what struck me after a few minutes behind the wheel of the
2011 Chevrolet Volt. It felt perfectly normal.

But the
Volt is anything but ordinary. The plug-in electric vehicle with a range extending gasoline engine can fly down the highway, roll through tight corners and silently stalk traffic under electric power.

This compact four-passenger, five-door car is so innovative and original that the Environmental Protection Agency still hasn't figured out how to calculate the Volt's fuel economy performance.

The car's 435-pound lithium ion battery pack delivers between 25 and 50 miles of performance. Then a 1.4-liter gasoline engine kicks on to power the electric drivetrain, allowing the Volt to keep going for as long as the driver wants.

There is no other electric vehicle in the world — in the world — that I could have hopped into at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, as I did on Sunday, and potentially driven to Miami or Los Angeles or Buenos Aires without ever having to plug the car into an outlet.

Sitting behind the wheel, I felt completely at ease. There were no tricks to learn with this car. Push down on the brake and then press the electric start button. The two LCD displays light up but the car doesn't make a sound.

Then reach over to the Mac-inspired center stack and grab the gear shifter, put the car in drive and hit the gas, err, accelerator. The Volt sounds a little like a golf cart, that high pitched whirl gaining intensity with acceleration. It's like being in a science fiction movie but in real life.
Sunday was the first day General Motors Co. let journalists drive the Volt on open highways around Metro Detroit. Chevrolet challenged journalists to test their eco-driving skills from Metro airport to Rochester in a 40 mile loop. The idea was to see if the journalists could make the trip on batteries only.

Careful drivers could easily hit 50 miles; hyper-milers, those people who find physical pleasure in stretching every amp as far as they can, could certainly do even better.

I was told this as I hit 80 mph and tapped the accelerator for a little more juice outside of Ann Arbor. The Volt has a top speed of 100 mph. Maybe I would become the first person in a Volt to get a speeding ticket — this car could be hazardous for lead foots.

Environmentally friendly driving and never using gasoline again is fine for many drivers; the Volt is a viable answer for the vast majority of people who drive less than 40 miles during a typical day.

But the car has an alternate personality to that air slick design and nearly silent ride: The Volt can fly like a bolt of lightning.

The 111-kilowatt electric drive unit pushes out 149 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. And that torque is available whenever you need it. There's no tachometer on the Volt, as there is never a moment behind the wheel that you need to worry about the engine's power band, that specific rpm when the engine is producing maximum power. The Volt is always producing maximum power.

Passing cars and trucks along Interstate 94 proved how fun electric cars are going to be. The Volt's electric power steering is firm and exact. The suspension, smooth with a little body to roll some on hard cornering, feels well-balanced. All told, the car that has been hyped for more than three years, is a hoot to drive.

After I drove more than 32 miles on electric power only — in a very un-eco-friendly manner — the Volt's little engine began powering the car. This was the moment I had been waiting for: It's one thing to power a car with batteries, but it's revolutionary to have a gas engine supply the power to electric motors.

The succession of power is more seamless than a presidential election. The engine is quiet and keeps humming along. There's never a glitch, a pause or a moment when the engine noticeably kicks on or off. For the most part, once the initial battery charge is drained, the engine produces the electric power to drive the motor.

However, due to regenerative braking, which converts braking energy into electricity and pushes it back to the battery, the car can turn off the motor and use just the batteries to power the car.
This provides all of those "stoplight" moments where you could roll down the window and smugly listen to all of those other cars idling, unnecessarily using up fuel. Then, when the light turns green, you tap the accelerator and quietly whirl down the road.

Most of all, there's nothing to adjust to in the Volt. My 75-mile trip used a total of 0.9 gallons of gasoline. But I would have been happy to drive farther.

-Scott Burgess, DetNews.com October 2010
