Only Chevy Volt in Illinois Arrives at Frankfort Dealership

Fox Chicago News- Given the pain at the gas pump, a new car at a southwest suburban dealership is likely to be very popular. Phillips Chevrolet in Frankfort is the only Illinois dealership so far with to have the electric Chevy Volt in their showroom.

The electric car can go about 35 miles on one charge before its gas generator kicks in.

At the Frankfort showroom you can look at the Volt, but you can't drive it home. If you want to buy one you'll have to get on a waiting list.

GM is manufacturing only 10,000 Volts this year. Each costs $41,000.

Camaro Named ‘Hottest Car’ in Inaugural SEMA Award

The Chevrolet Camaro has been named the “hottest car” at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The inaugural SEMA Award recognizes the most accessory-friendly new models, based on the number of vehicles exhibited at the show.

“A booth space is a ballot, and the models these exhibitors have selected represent their vote,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO.
According to SEMA, exhibitors manufacture thousands of products that improve performance, convenience, appearance and comfort. While products are available for every make and model vehicle, exhibitors are investing more into the Chevrolet Camaro than any other car. Consumers, therefore, can expect to find more options for personalizing their Camaro.
“More than any other venue, the cars exhibitors and attendees bring to SEMA embody the passion and excitement of car enthusiasts everywhere,” said John Fitzpatrick, Chevrolet Performance Cars marketing manager. “Based on the sheer number of Camaros displayed on the floor, and parked in the adjacent lots, the Camaro is clearly the hottest car of the show.”

OnStar- A Real Star

By Cleo Simmons, ALDA Chicago Style

I told Linda Belice, our wonderful editor; about my new car having OnStar with a TTY and that the TTY was the first one that the car dealer, Phillips Chevrolet, had ever installed! Linda asked if I would write and explain about OnStar and the TTY.

I never knew anything about OnStar. When I picked up my new Chevy Malibu, David, my son-in-law, actually drove my car. They said to press the blue button which is on the rear view mirror and an Advisor will explain all about the service. Well, David got to hear about all of the features and what it does. Having this little problem of being deaf, I still knew nothing. When we got home, David explained as much as he could. The dealership said they would send me an email and that I could go online to read about all of the features. I thought great but it better tell me how I can “hear” what the OnStar 24/7 Advisor is saying.

If you have never heard of OnStar or only know it by name, I’ll tell you what it does. If I have an accident (bit my tongue), the 24/7 OnStar staff will automatically send the police and an ambulance to the accident site. If I have not had an accident but need help, I can push the red OnStar button on the mirror and they will send help. If I lock my keys in the car, I can call and they can unlock the car. If my car is stolen, they know where it is and can slow the car down or even stop the car from starting.

If there is something wrong with my car, OnStar will email me a notice. I also receive a monthly email with a diagnostic test report on my car. In the first email, they advised me that my tires needed air, how much air was in them and what it should be. They also will tell me when it’s time to change my oil or any other maintenance that is needed. Can you imagine—I don’t even have to take the car in to know if it needs service!

On the email that I received, it said if you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, click here. Needless to say, that was me so I “clicked.” It explained that there is a 24/7 connection to an OnStar TTY Advisor available through the GM/Ultratec Compact TTY. We contacted the special number listed and they explained everything about the TTY and that the car dealer where I bought my car would handle everything, including the installation.

The TTY is now installed in my glove compartment. To connect to OnStar, I push the OnStar button and a TTY Advisor asks, “How can I help you?” Amazing! The guys at Phillips Chevy thought “this is cool.” Me too.

As far as cost, I paid the GM dealer $1,000 for the equipment and installation. I will be reimbursed through the GM Mobility Program. I already received a letter that it is being processed and I should receive my reimbursement check within six weeks.

There is also “icing on the cake.” Most new GM vehicles today come with one year of OnStar service free. My vehicle automatically qualifies for two additional years of the OnStar Safe & Sound Plan at no cost to me through the GM Mobility Program. This is approximately $400 in service costs FREE to me.

Chevy Volt owners get OnStar-powered website

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids like the 2011 Chevrolet Volt (and we'll let you decide which of those two categories General Motors' green halo car fits into...) promise to save drivers money on fuel bills. But, just as operating expenses for traditional cars rises and falls with the price of gas, so too will battery-powered cars vary in their running costs as electric utility rates fluctuate.

GM has announced a new website for
Chevrolet Volt owners called MyVolt.com that seeks to help consumers keep their electric charging rates in check. Statistics for battery usage and fuel economy will be transferred to the user's Facebook and Twitter accounts, and utility companies are expected to use this data to help owners choose times to plug their cars into the grid. These utility companies can also make sure their power grids are up to the challenge of keeping EVs on the road.

Other techy benefits offered to Volt owners include a display to show whether the car is plugged in (and whether it's charging at 120 or 240 volts), the creation of a charging schedule to make use of the best rates and the ability to monitor current battery state of charge and predicted range. One intriguing feature will allow OnStar to create its own charging schedule where the program will choose the lowest rates possible in order to achieve a full charge by a set time.

There will also be a provision to remotely start the Volt to get the interior up to a set temperature, and future updates will allow further customization of the car, such as setting radio presets. Want to know more? Check out the official press release after the break.

Michigan Readies as the U.S. Prepares for Electric Vehicles

More than 5,300 home and workplace charging stations to be installed on Michigan

More than 5,300 home and workplace charging stations are planned to be installed in Michigan as the state prepares for the introduction of new electric vehicle technology. General Motors and its partners are teaming up to help give Chevrolet Volt buyers more options for charging their vehicles.
DTE Energy pledges to install 2,500 240V home charging stations for plug-in vehicles, and Consumers Energy is matching that pledge.  The utilities will cover up to $2,500 of the cost of the charging station and installation. GM's Voltec 240 V home charging station is priced at just $490 plus an estimated $1,475 for installation.  The city of Lansing Board of Water and Light will provide an additional 25 charging stations to its customers and by the end of 2011, General Motors plans to have almost 350 charging stations in place for employees at its facilities in Michigan, with more than 100 already installed.
In addition, more than 1,500 Chevrolet dealers across the U.S. plan to install charging stations for use by customers. This number includes nearly 650 dealers that will soon begin selling the Volt in retail launch markets and approximately 900 others across the country that are authorized to provide service.
More important than the total volume of charging stations is where they will be located, according to Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman, Global Product Operations. “Since our homes may soon be our fueling stations of the future we believe the most important way to make communities 'plug-in ready' is by enabling residential charging.”
Most of these stations will be placed in consumers’ garages, carports and driveways.  A few will be strategically located, such as the two GM placed in front of its headquarters at the Renaissance Center at the building’s entrance off of Jefferson Ave in Detroit.  A total of 18 charging stations will be operational in and around the Renaissance Center within the next week.
“We think this opens up doors for those Volt owners who want to charge at work or who don’t have a place at home to charge the car overnight.  They’ll be able to drive electrically when they can, and they can drive on gasoline when they need to,” Stephens said in remarks at the Business of Plugging In Conference in Detroit on Tuesday.  “We see these stations as an incentive to our employees to join the Electric Vehicle movement … and as a demonstration to other businesses to encourage their own employees to drive greener.”
GM-installed charging stations for use by its employees in Michigan will include 34 at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly center where the Volt is built and 140 in the homes of employees driving early-build models for quality evaluation.
Many of the stations at GM facilities will be powered by renewable solar energy. The Detroit-Hamtramck assembly center already has 10 stations in place powered by photovoltaic systems from SunLogics Inc. Envision Solar International (OTCBB:EVSI) will provide its innovative Solar Tree® with EnvisionTrak™ system  for use at the Warren Technical Center and Milford Proving Ground.
GM envisioned the need for public and workplace charging stations in 2007 when it formed a collaboration with DTE, Consumers Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute and more than 50 other utilities. Many of those utilities are or will be launching similar programs to help customers prepare for electrification.
Michigan is one of nine regions in the United States identified by the U.S. Department of Energy to lead the electrification movement.  Free home charging stations provided by ECOtality and Coulomb Technologies will be available to 4,400 eligible Volt owners through a program funded by the DOE.
“We’ve put a lot of thought into the best way to enhance the electric vehicle experience,” Stephens said.  “We’ve focused on everything from vehicle-to-grid technical interfaces, codes and standards to leading consumer education and outreach.”
In fact, the Society of Engineers-approved industry standard for charging equipment was led by a GM engineer. And GM’s Opel subsidiary recently announced a vehicle-to-grid experiment in Germany involving a battery electric version of the Opel Meriva.
