Chevy Announces Sonic Accessory Plan

Chevrolet will continue its Z-Spec accessory offerings this fall for the launch of its new Sonic subcompact, targeted at young buyers.

“Customization is particularly important with the customers we believe will gravitate toward the Sonic, and we want to help them make their vehicle look exactly the way they want as easily as possible,” Rick Scheidt, vice president-Chevrolet marketing, says in a statement.

The Z-Spec offerings include a body-color ground-effects kit, complete with a silver-tip exhaust, contrasting upper and lower grille surrounds and different-colored mirror cap and roof spoiler.

Also available are 16- and 17-in. painted alloy wheels, and aluminum pedals and sill plates for the car’s interior.

Sonics with Z-Spec “Color Out” packages – black accents on a white Sonic and white accents on an orange Sonics – will be on display at next week’s New York auto show.

The ’12 Sonic, equipped with a 1.4L turbocharged gas engine, arrives this fall in a crowded but booming segment.

Small-car sales were up 20.9% in the first quarter, Ward’s data shows, thanks to the Ford Fiesta’s 20,000-plus incremental units.

The Sonic’s predecessor, the Chevy Aveo, has been one of the slower-selling models among U.S. subcompacts in recent years. It sales rank fourth among the nine models in the segment. The Nissan Versa is No.1.

Aveo to be Renamed Sonic

Chevrolet
announced today that its all-new, U.S. built small car will be called the Chevrolet Sonic in North America.

"The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name," said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet U.S. Marketing. "The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about."

The small car
will carry the Sonic name in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Production of the Sonic begins in 2011 at GM's Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling, and will help restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area.

The vehicle
will continue to be called Aveo in other parts of the world, where it will be sold in more than 50 countries.

GM will change Aveo’s name to Sonic, reports say

General Motors Co. is planning to change the name of its remodeled entry-level sedan, the Chevrolet Aveo, to Sonic next year, according to reports on an independent GM blog and in a newspaper.

The GM Inside News blog, which is not affiliated with the automaker, first reported the name change this week. Although GM officials refused to confirm the Sonic name choice, the Detroit Free Press reported that two unidentified sources familiar with the plan confirmed the blog report.

According to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records, General Motors LCC filed for a trademark for the name “Chevrolet Sonic” on Oct. 5.

GM has been considering a name change for the
subcompact sedan since October. GM North America President Mark Reuss confirmed that confusion over how to pronounce “Aveo” had sparked the desire for a change.

The redesigned vehicle, which will have hatchback and sedan versions, joins the
2011 Chevrolet Cruze and the upcoming Chevrolet minicar in GM’s small-car segment.

GM introduced the
Aveo in the United States in 2004. It is slated to be built in Orion Township, Mich. The plant had been scheduled to close until GM granted it the production of the Aveo in exchange for UAW concessions that stemmed from the automaker’s 2009 government-sponsored bankruptcy reorganization.

Sonic is the name of the third-largest dealership group in the United States, based on new-vehicle retail sales units. Sonic Automotive Inc., of Charlotte, N.C., has more than 100 dealerships selling 30 brands. It has Chevrolet dealerships in Alabama, Texas, South Carolina and Oklahoma.

According to the GM Inside News blog, the automaker could show the car during the next auto show circuit, possibly at the Detroit auto show in January.

The
2011 Aveo starts at $12,685, including delivery.

New Chevrolet Aveo Brings 'Hot-Hatch' Style to Small Car Segment

There is no shortage of world firsts for Chevrolet at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show, and joining the Orlando MPV and Cruze hatchback show car will be the all-new Chevrolet Aveo 5-door. The car will go on sale in the United States and Canada in 2011.

The Aveo RS show car was displayed at the Detroit and Geneva motor shows earlier in 2010, and the final production-ready car looks every bit as compelling as the show car.

Entering the highly competitive global small car segment, the striking design elements of the new
Chevrolet Aveo include the dynamic looking front with its exposed twin-headlamps and Chevrolet’s signature dual port grille, compact taut body panels with a rising shoulder line and short rear overhangs, rear door handles 'hidden’ in the c-pillar and a 'body in, wheels out' profile.

Patent Drawings Reveal 2012 Chevrolet Aveo Sedan

The public got its first look at the all-new 2012 Chevrolet Aveo at this year's Detriot Auto Show, but the RS Concept was only shown as a five-door hatchback, and as we all know, four-door sedans remain the preferred form factor here in the U.S.A. Newly discovered patent reveals the look of the three-box Aveo, which remains the same as the hatch from B-pillar backwards, but carries a few more interesting design cues.

The roof-line of the Aveo sedan has a similar profile to the larger Cruze and from the side, the tail-lights have the same triangular shape. From the rear, the horizontally arranged lights of the Cruze are replaced by vertically stacked lamps and the sedan gets conventional rear door handles in place of the hidden units in the C-pillar of the hatch. The production Chevy Aveo should arrive sometime during this upcoming auto show season, with production starting in the first half of 2011 at GM's Lake Orion assembly plant north of Detroit.

Chevy Adds Content to Small Cars

Chevrolet is reinventing its small-car strategy with the Cruze, Aveo and Spark.

"Everything you know about the small cars that we have done for the U.S. in the past does not apply anymore," says Margaret Brooks, product director for Chevrolet's small and compact cars.

The Cruze compact and Aveo subcompact will move away from economy-car status, with a long list of standard equipment, such as air conditioning and heated outside mirrors. The Spark minicar, though, will be targeted at budget buyers.

Chevrolet's strategy relies on engineering outside the United States. U.S. sales for the German-engineered Cruze begin in the third quarter, followed late in 2011 by the Korean-redesigned Aveo. The Spark goes on sale in 2012.

Today, Chevrolet's small-car lineup consists of the Aveo, Cobalt and HHR. Combined U.S. sales of the three models was 214,082 in 2009, down 37 percent from 2008. The Cruze will replace the Cobalt; the HHR will be dropped in 2011.

Brooks says Chevrolet revisited its standard-equipment strategy for the Cruze and Aveo to appeal to buyers "moving down from bigger cars."

"They are not looking to be in the lowest-priced vehicle in the lineup," she says. "They want a richly contented vehicle. We are going to market with really nicely equipped cars."

Brooks adds: "Cruze is clearly a core product for Chevy."

As for the Spark, which will be the lowest-priced Chevrolet, the standard-equipment level will not be as extensive. "Spark has a different role to play," she says.

Cruze

The Cruze is the successor to the Cobalt, although the price point will be higher and the list of standard equipment longer. The Cruze comes with air conditioning, power windows and door locks -- all options on the Cobalt -- plus 10 airbags.

GM has not revealed the Cruze's base price. The Cobalt has four airbags and a starting price of $15,710 with shipping.

Brooks says that for the Cruze, "Most people are surprised the target customer is more apt to be in the 40 to 50 age group, more apt to be an empty nester" or a family needing a second vehicle.

The Cruze is aimed at the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

The Cruze was developed by GM's Adam Opel r&d center in Ruesselsheim, Germany, on the automaker's new global compact platform. U.S. production is slated for Lordstown, Ohio. One model, a four-door sedan, will be offered.

Aveo

Brooks says: "The Aveo is a sporty car in the European sense, and it is going to have sporty ride and handling characteristics to go along with it." An Aveo, she says, "has a more youthful personality than a Cruze."

The car is engineered by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology in South Korea on GM's new global small-car platform. The Aveo will be assembled in Lake Orion, Mich. Two models are planned, a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback. Competitors will include the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.

Spark

The Spark will be the smallest car GM sells in North America. GM has not announced where the U.S. version of the Spark will be assembled.

One model, a five-door hatchback, is planned. The Spark is engineered by GM Daewoo on GM's new minicar platform. The European version is 143.3 inches long, about 3 feet longer than the Smart ForTwo.

Today, the two-passenger Smart "is one competitor" for the Spark, Brooks says, but "we think there will be additional cars coming in that space."

Volume in the minicar segment is hard to predict, Brooks says. But, she adds: "We do know from our research, there are customers, especially in urban areas, that really like the compactness of the car, the affordability, the fuel economy."
