And the top scorer is.... the Chevy Equinox

In the recent USA Today's $29,000 SUV Shootout, the top 10 SUV vehicles were judged on pros, cons, EPA mileage rating and observed mileage in highway test. The winner was the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox with 797.3 points!

"The Equinox is the clear winner in my book, "Varela said, "seemingly belonging to a completely different category...luxury."

"For $28,500, this care is loaded with family-friendly features," Newman said. Among them: dual fold-up DVD screens, a backup camera and the only powered lift-gate in the group.

"There's a real premium feel throughout the interior," Robinson said. Varela agreed: "The fit and finish go way above and beyond the others." Lawrence said, "I'ts so much more substantial."

Chevrolet Volt Rollout Speeds Up: Available Nationwide By End of 2011

Chevrolet is stepping up the national rollout of the Volt to match customer interest.
“We’re accelerating our launch plan to have Volts in all participating Chevrolet dealerships in every single state in the union by the end of this year,” said Rick Scheidt, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “This is the right thing to do for our customers and our dealers who are seeing increased traffic onto their showroom floors.”
Chevrolet Volts have been delivered to customers in the Washington D.C. area, as well as California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Texas.  Customer deliveries in Michigan begin this spring.
Customers nationwide will be able to order Volts with participating dealers beginning in the second quarter.  Deliveries will begin in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii in the third quarter.
During the fourth quarter, Chevrolet expects to deliver Volts in all 50 states.
The decision to accelerate the national rollout was influenced by Chevrolet dealers like Criswell Chevrolet in Gaithersburg, Md., which has seen a surge of consumers interested in the Volt.
“The Volt is clearly bringing new customers to Chevrolet," said Harry E. Criswell III, president and owner of Criswell Chevrolet "We are seeing 10 to 15 customers a week who are seriously considering buying a Volt. Many of them own competitive brands and now have a Chevy on their shopping list because of the Volt."
Some of that consumer interest has been fueled by prestigious industry awards and recognitions for the Volt, including:
- 2011 North American Car of the Year
- Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year
-
Green Car Journal 2011 Green Car of the Year
-
Car and Driver 10 Best for 2011
-
Ward’s AutoWorld 10 Best Engines for 2011
-
AUTOMOBILE Magazine 2011 Automobile of the Year
-
2010 Breakthrough Technology, by Popular Mechanics
“Such recognition provides customers with credible, expert endorsement of new models, which is important for vehicles like the Volt that feature significant new technologies,” said Scheidt. “Based on the awards the Volt has received, and the number of consumers expressing interest in the technology, we believe the Volt is the right car at the right time.”
The Volt is an electric vehicle that offers a total driving range of up to 379 miles, based on EPA estimates. For the first 35 miles, the Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 344 miles on a full tank.

GM unveils new subcompact

Aimed at first-time buyers, Chevrolet Sonic positioned to challenge Ford & Honda models

General Motors Co. is taking another shot at subcompact buyers, this time around with the all-new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic — a sporty replacement for the outgoing Aveo.

The Sonic makes its world debut today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new car, which goes on sale later this year, will come in two body styles — sedan and hatchback. It will be available with a 1.8-liter engine mated to either a six-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual, or a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission.

Pricing and fuel economy figures have not been announced. GM will build the Sonic at its Orion Assembly Plant alongside Buick's all-new compact Verano, which also debuts today at the Detroit show. The Sonic will be smaller than Chevrolet's recently launched Cruze, but larger than the Spark, which arrives in 2012.

With the Sonic, the Detroit automaker hopes to rev up sales in a segment crucial to capturing first-time buyers, and as automakers hurry to add more small cars to prepare for higher gas prices and stricter federal fuel economy regulations.

GM is banking on the Sonic to get the automaker back in fighting form as it goes up against the popular Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit. The new name is meant to reflect the depth of its overhaul from the outgoing Aveo, which first hit the U.S. market in 2003.

"The small car segment is really one undergoing a lot of change right now," said Margaret Brooks, Chevrolet's small-car marketing director. "We see this as one of the growth sports in the market."

The Sonic is crammed with gee-whiz technologies typically reserved for larger, more expensive cars, such as XM Satellite Radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

And while Americans are still warming up to small cars, the Sonic ultimately will prove its mettle overseas, said Aaron Bragman, an analyst at IHS Automotive in Northville.

"If it doesn't sell 100,000 units here in North America, that's OK," Bragman said. "They sell far more of these kinds of vehicles in China and Brazil."

Chevrolet Volt, Ford Explorer named Detroit Free Press Car and Truck of the Year

As more and more Car and Truck of the Year awards pour in from a variety of major publications, it's no shock that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt continues to take home top honors as the best car of 2011. Both Motor Trend and Automobile have deemed the Volt their Car of the Year, and General Motors' high-profile EV is even a finalist for the prestigious North American Car of the Year award. (Our readers, however, would apparently rather see that honor go to the 2011 Hyundai Sonata). Thus, it's no surprise that the Volt was just named Car of the Year by The Detroit Free Press.

Similarly, the 2011 Ford Explorer is in the running for North American Truck of the Year, and the Detroit Free Press is honoring it as the best 'truck' of 2011. Freep auto critic Mark Phelan states that in the road ahead, automakers must choose the "right shade of green" for each type of vehicle. Phelan explains:

"The Volt allows most owners to go weeks or months without stopping at a gas pump. The Explorer recasts America's best-selling SUV in a fuel-efficient new form based on the same chassis as the Ford Taurus large sedan."

Interestingly, The Detroit Free Press details its second and third place choices for Car of the Year, with the Hyundai Sonata and Nissan Leaf taking those spots, respectively. These two vehicles are finalists for the North American Car of the Year award, and we're wondering if the Free Press' predictions foreshadow the decisions that the NACTOY judges will make (Note: Phelan is a member of the jury). We'll have the answer to that in just a few weeks, but for now, we tip our hats to the Volt and Explorer on taking home the Detroit Free Press awards.

Volt Versus Leaf seems a non-contest, but time will tell

I wonder how many days it will take in 2011 for a new Chevrolet Volt, with its 300 miles plus of range thanks to a battery backed up by a gasoline motor, to drive past a Nissan Leaf - range indeterminate but said to be 100 miles on a good day - stranded by the side of the road with a flat battery.

Let's hope Volt buyers are generous types who will sympathize with the afflictions of the less fortunate, even though it might be hard to to say I told you so.

After all, despite a $6.6 billion investment program, the battery-powered Leaf is almost undermined by extreme weather, hot or cold. If a Leaf is carrying a full load of passengers, that will curb the amount of miles available. If Leaf drivers venture on to the highway and start doing speeds close to the maximum allowed, the range will dip alarmingly. Perhaps the most surprising thing about battery-only projects is that they survived at all when it became clear that extended ranger electric vehicles like the Volt, and improved plug-in hybrids, were going to be available at the same time. It's not as though vehicles like the Leaf have much of a price advantage. Wouldn't it make more sense for battery-only vehicles to be much less ambitious, cheap and cheerful little golf-cart like vehicles used for a quick jaunt down to the shops?

The extended range Volt has a much smaller battery capability - up to 40 miles we are led to believe - but because of its auxiliary gasoline engine, range is over 300 miles, and of course it can easily be refueled in a couple of minutes at a gas station. A dead Leaf will take maybe eight hours to fully recharge, although a short, sharp charge will take considerably less time.

These huge drawbacks haven't stopped European motoring journalists voting the Leaf Car of the Year for 2011, despite the fact that the over-riding reason for the award was down to its unproven battery technology. This would seem to be a huge hostage to fortune. And its high price (even with the $6,600 government subsidy in Britain) will scare away regular buyers who want value for money and flexibility when they buy a car. In the U.S., some motoring writers have nominated the Volt as Car of the Year, and although its specification promises much more than the Leaf, the car still has much to prove. Will its battery range get consistently close to the claim of 40 odd miles? Can it really perform long term as promised, belting down the highway with power from the gasoline engine generating enough electricity for the purpose? How long will the batteries last?

Maybe by this time next year the Leaf and the Volt will have proved themselves valuable vehicles which will command car buyer's respect. I haven't drive the Volt yet, but my money reckons it is more likely to be in a winning position 12 months from now. I have a vision of the Leaf and other battery-only cars either stranding their owners miles from home, or subjecting them to teeth-grinding humiliation as they creep back to base at 15 miles an hour being overtaken by fist-waving truckers and contemptuous cyclists. We'll see.

Aveo to be Renamed Sonic

Chevrolet
announced today that its all-new, U.S. built small car will be called the Chevrolet Sonic in North America.

"The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name," said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet U.S. Marketing. "The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about."

The small car
will carry the Sonic name in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Production of the Sonic begins in 2011 at GM's Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling, and will help restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area.

The vehicle
will continue to be called Aveo in other parts of the world, where it will be sold in more than 50 countries.

Chevrolet Volts Begin Shipping to Dealerships

First Customers Should Get Extended-Range Electric Cars Within Days

The first Chevrolet Volts left the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant on Monday destined for initial retail launch markets.  Customers in California, Texas, Washington D.C. and New York could receive the world’s first-and-only electric vehicle with extended-range capability in the next few days.
These are the first of an expected 160 vehicles to be shipped this week.
“Today is a historic milestone for Chevrolet,” said Tony DiSalle, Volt marketing director. “We have redefined automotive transportation with the Volt, and soon the first customers will be able to experience gas-free commuting with the freedom to take an extended trip whenever or wherever they want.”
The heart of the Volt is its Voltec electric propulsion system, which combines battery-only electric driving with an efficient, gas-powered engine giving the Volt up to 379 total miles of driving before having to recharge the battery or fill up the small gas tank.  The Volt is the only mass produced U.S.-built electric vehicle.
Earlier this year, Chevrolet shipped 15 pre-production Volts to technology enthusiasts and electric vehicle advocates whom were the first consumers to experience the Volt every day under real-world conditions during a 90-day vehicle and charging evaluation program.
MotorTrend, Automobile and Green Car Journal each recently selected the Volt as their Car of the Year.

GM will change Aveo’s name to Sonic, reports say

General Motors Co. is planning to change the name of its remodeled entry-level sedan, the Chevrolet Aveo, to Sonic next year, according to reports on an independent GM blog and in a newspaper.

The GM Inside News blog, which is not affiliated with the automaker, first reported the name change this week. Although GM officials refused to confirm the Sonic name choice, the Detroit Free Press reported that two unidentified sources familiar with the plan confirmed the blog report.

According to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records, General Motors LCC filed for a trademark for the name “Chevrolet Sonic” on Oct. 5.

GM has been considering a name change for the
subcompact sedan since October. GM North America President Mark Reuss confirmed that confusion over how to pronounce “Aveo” had sparked the desire for a change.

The redesigned vehicle, which will have hatchback and sedan versions, joins the
2011 Chevrolet Cruze and the upcoming Chevrolet minicar in GM’s small-car segment.

GM introduced the
Aveo in the United States in 2004. It is slated to be built in Orion Township, Mich. The plant had been scheduled to close until GM granted it the production of the Aveo in exchange for UAW concessions that stemmed from the automaker’s 2009 government-sponsored bankruptcy reorganization.

Sonic is the name of the third-largest dealership group in the United States, based on new-vehicle retail sales units. Sonic Automotive Inc., of Charlotte, N.C., has more than 100 dealerships selling 30 brands. It has Chevrolet dealerships in Alabama, Texas, South Carolina and Oklahoma.

According to the GM Inside News blog, the automaker could show the car during the next auto show circuit, possibly at the Detroit auto show in January.

The
2011 Aveo starts at $12,685, including delivery.

Chevrolet Cruze Top Choice over Civic and Corolla in HGTV.com ‘Car Hunters’ Challenge

Beginning today, fans of HGTV’s “House Hunters” can watch as car shoppers compare the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corolla. The “Car Hunters” videos featured on HGTV.com and in television advertising follow participants during an independent test as they choose the car that best fits their needs.
After the in-depth evaluation, more people said they were likely to buy a Cruze than Civic and Corolla, combined.
The Car Hunters challenge is an example of how Chevrolet plans to introduce the all-new Cruze to consumers who may not think of Chevrolet when shopping for a small car.
For the U.S. market, the Cruze is built in Lordstown, Ohio. Starting at $16,995, including destination, Cruze offers compact-car buyers class-leading standard safety features, class-leading 42 mpg highway fuel-economy with the Cruze Eco model, and more refinement than more-established competitors. In fact, the biggest challenge Cruze faces is its name.
“Cruze is an all-new model, and an all-new name, entering an incredibly competitive segment,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “To help make the Cruze a success, we are aggressively pursuing opportunities like ‘Car Hunters,’ where compact-car shoppers can compare the Cruze directly to the competition. When they do, we believe most customers will decide that Cruze is the best car for their money.”
To ensure unbiased test results, GfK conducted the test with no involvement from Chevrolet. GfK purchased comparably equipped test vehicles from local dealers, with each car falling into a price range of $22,000 - $24,700. GfK also selected the participants, each of whom was in-market for a compact sedan.
The car shoppers were presented similar information for each vehicle, and took all three cars on identical test drives. After the in-depth comparison test, each participant was asked to pick the vehicle they were most likely to purchase.
“Each vehicle was represented equitably,” said Alan Czarnomski, GfK executive vice president, “enabling participants to make unbiased decisions about which vehicle best fit their needs.”
Of the 26 participants, 16 picked the Cruze as their favorite vehicle. Eight selected the Honda Civic, and one selected the Toyota Corolla. Participants were informed of Chevrolet’s involvement only after they had made their vehicle selection.
Videos of the participants will be featured at www.carhunterschallenge.com, as well as in television advertising. The Car Hunters spots allow viewers to follow people through the car-buying process, just as HGTV’s hit show “House Hunters” follows people through the house-buying process.
Such efforts will play a key part in Chevrolet’s effort to raise customers’ awareness and consideration for Cruze.
Other examples include test drives at NASCAR races and Chevrolet events. In Texas alone, Chevrolet conducted more than 16,000 Cruze test drives during the State Fair of Texas, and another 750 Cruze drives during the NASCAR AAA Texas 500 race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Beginning in January, select dealers will offer customers the convenience of test driving the Cruze, Corolla and Civic at Chevrolet showrooms.
“We expect the results of our dealer test drives to be very similar to the results of the Car Hunters challenge,” said Perry. “When comparing compact cars back to back, most people are impressed with the refinement, features, and overall value of Cruze.”

New Chevrolet Cruze Eco Achieves Segment-Leading 42 MPG on the Highway

The official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco are in and they’re good. Segment-leading good. It delivers an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway (manual transmission models), with equally impressive city fuel economy of 28 mpg.
Cruze Eco’s highway fuel economy beats non-hybrid segment competitors – including 23 percent greater highway fuel economy than the Honda Civic – as well as the Ford Fiesta subcompact and many hybrid models. In fact, it’s better than Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.
“Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.”
The Cruze Eco carries an MSRP of $18,895 (including destination charge). It goes on sale in January.
To achieve its segment-leading fuel economy, Cruze’s engineers focused on aerodynamic performance, mass optimization and powertrain enhancements. The refinements in each area paid big dividends towards the car’s overall efficiency, while providing engineers with valuable information to help enhance the efficiency of future Chevrolet models.
“We left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed,” said Russell. “Our engineers were comprehensive and thorough when it came to evaluating and modifying the aspects of the car’s performance that contribute to fuel economy.”
