Chevrolet Donates $10,000 to CATCH in Honor of Detroit Tigers Legend Sparky Anderson

Chevrolet has donated $10,000 to CATCH, a Detroit-based children’s charity, in honor of Sparky Anderson. Anderson died on Thursday, at the age of 76.

"This is an amazing gift in honor of a truly amazing man,” said Jim Hughes, CATCH executive director.   “We're extremely grateful to Chevrolet, not only for honoring the life of our charismatic leader with this generous donation, but also for recognizing that CATCH will remain a viable and impactful charity in Detroit for many years to come."

Anderson was the first major league manager to win a World Series in both the American and National Leagues; the first with the Cincinnati Reds in their Big Red Machine era, when the team won the 1975 and 1976 World Series; and the second with the Detroit Tigers, where he guided the Tigers to a World Series victory in 1984.

Anderson founded CATCH in 1987, to help support sick, injured and at-risk pediatric patients who receive care from Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry Ford Hospital. Anderson is quoted as saying, “There’s nothing in this word that you will ever do that’s better than helping a child.”

“We wanted to pay tribute to Sparky Anderson who left an indelible mark on Chevrolet’s home town,” said Kevin Mayer, Chevrolet advertising director, “contributing to one of the greatest years in Detroit Tigers history, and helping thousands of Detroit kids in need.”

Chevrolet has long been associated with baseball, appearing as the “Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball®” in 1985, which continues today. In addition, the Chevy Youth Baseball program has benefitted more than one million youth baseball players and their families since the program began in 2006.

Chevrolet Has Another Successful Year of Pitching In for Youth Baseball

Chevrolet’s support of baseball from the makeover of youth fields to continuing as ‘Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball^®, came together in numerous ways in communities across the United States in 2010.

“Our dealers have worked with youth leagues in 28 states to encourage the dream of reaching the Majors for thousands of children,” said Alan Batey, vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “We think it is important to continue this tradition and bring the game to the next generation of players.”

Chevrolet, along with 1,000 of its dealerships, has expanded its support of youth baseball players in communities across the country through the Chevy Youth Baseball program this year. Dealers helped raise more than $4 million to benefit nearly 40,000 teams and 600,000 players. These dealers have helped raise more than $11 million over the last five years.

Participating youth baseball leagues receive equipment and monetary donations, unique MLB experiences including game tickets and invitations to exclusive instructional clinics, as well as fundraising opportunities, compliments of Chevrolet and its dealers.

Building Diamonds and Dreams

Chevrolet partnered with Major League Baseball® , MLB Advanced Media and The Scotts Company, the Official Lawn Care Company of MLB, to refurbish five youth baseball fields in the U.S. through ‘Building Diamonds and Dreams. Fans of local youth baseball teams entered their local community for a chance to win the field makeover.

The fields will be refurbished by Ripken Design, a division of Ripken Baseball, Inc., with the use of Scotts products. Ripken Design is a professional design and consulting firm that specializes in the feasibility and design of amateur and professional sports facilities.

Phillips Chevrolet is supporting Frankfort through a partnership with Frankfort Square Baseball League. Phillips Chevy provided baseball equipment, instructional clinics, a monetary donation, and an opportunity to raise an additional $10,000 in funds through a Chevy vehicle giveaway-fundraiser. The effort by Phillips Chevrolet is part of the Chevy Youth Baseball initiative sweeping the nation from March through July 2010.

“Chevrolet has a long history with baseball at the national level. We wanted to bring that excitement and commitment to youth baseball, in the communities where our customers and their families live,” said Mike Maheras, General Sales Manager for Phillips Chevrolet. “Youth baseball has always played an important role in Frankfort so we are thrilled to support our kids in a meaningful way.”

Phillips Chevrolet will present Frankfort Square Baseball League with equipment kits complete with equipment bags, baseball buckets, dry-erase coach's clipboards and Chevy Youth Baseball t-shirts. Chevy Offers iPod Baseball App

Chevrolet is offering iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad owners a chance to play a fully 3D simulation baseball game and a chance to win a trip to attend the 2010 All Star Game with Chevy Baseball, a new application from Freeverse.

Users can play multiple three or nine inning games with life-like control of pitching and hitting via the accelerometer and simple tap to throw fielding mechanics. The app also allows players access to the Chevy Dugout where fans can learn more about select Chevy vehicles like the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and Equinox as well as enter for a chance to win a trip to the 2010 All Star Game.

"We think the Chevy Baseball App is a take on two American icons delivered in a modern way," said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. "The program is designed to give baseball fans the opportunity to experience some of the magic of America's favorite pastime, and provides information on our cars, crossovers and trucks from Chevrolet.”
